About me

I have spent most of my professional career at Massachusetts General Hospital and at Harvard. For the past 29 years I have worked in the Child Psychiatry Service at Massachusetts General Hospital doing research and seeing patients. As a senior psychologist there, I have had the opportunity to work with leaders in the fields of psychiatry, psychology, and pediatrics. My main goals have been to explore the impact of psychological problems and interventions on child, family, and public health outcomes especially in underserved populations like the poor, minority groups, abd individuals with disabilities in the U.S., and in many other countries as well

I studied at the Harvard Graduate School of Education in the 1970’s and early 1980’s and received my first academic appointment at the Harvard Medical School in 1984; I am currently an Associate Professor of Psychology there. I have published more than fifty research papers in journals including the New England Journal of Medicine and JAMA

My research interests include mental health screening in pediatrics, assessing changes in functioning in response to mental health interventions, child hunger, child abuse, and post traumatic stress disorder. I have collaborated on studies with researchers from all around the world and with agencies including the National Institute of Mental Health, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the Maternal and Child Health Bureau, the Center for Disease Control, the Department of Agriculture, the Enviromental Protectio Agency and public health, mental health, and school departments in numerous countries, states, counties, and cities. I have done research on Head Start, the National School Breakfast Program, and mental health interventions for children with burns at Shriners Hospitals for Children. Working with my colleague Michael Jellinek, MD, our research on children’s mental health with the Pediatric Symptom Checklist has lead to collaborations with researchers in Chile, Japan, the Netherlands, Cambodia, and Botswana as well as many states. I have published more than fifty papers on this research in academic journals.
